Runner is a book of athletics, yes, and also of much more. It's a book of sacrifice and effort. It is a book that encompasses the life and all the athletic tradition of Ethiopia from the eyes of little Genet. It is the story of a little girl who is born outside the world, in that lost place she is free to run until she touches the clouds, "to run and run through the sky and the open belly of the mountain". And running saves her from war, hunger and poverty. It is a story of achievement, of passion, and also a recognition of all the girls who run and all the Ethiopian athletes.
It is a book perhaps more recommended for children, but it is also an entertaining and simple reading for adults. The main character, Genet, and her story are totally fictional but the sports achievements, medals and marks belong to Tiki Gelana, Ethiopian runner and winner of the marathon in the 2012 London Olympics.
A great book by María Reimóndez, highly recommended.
