Summer is a time for adventure, to be out and enjoy the good weather, to go to the beach and the mountains, to see new places... to get to the winter and the routine with the batteries charged. Now, in August and with the shadow of September and the beginning of the school year approaching, the body asks to get out more than ever and go to the mountains.
This time it was Ourense, the town of Montederramo. Here is one of the most southern birch forests in Europe, located in the San Mamede mountain range.
The birch forest route, which runs for about 30 km (there is another shorter one), leads through the birches and to the San Mamede chapel, with spectacular views of the Serra. It's a perfect route for walking while picking the wild blueberries that grow on the sides of the paths, or for running (although the last kilometer of ascent is a little harder).
It is also a place full of legends and stories, such as that of the hermit of San Mamede or the werewolf Romasanta.
It's a little piece of the world that's worth having a look at.
See you soon!
